Alternative Medicine for Cancer Boston MA – Meet Avinoam Lerner

So grateful to be featured in this article. Thank you Boston Voyager Magazine!

Today we’d like to introduce you to Avinoam Lerner.Alternative Medicine cancer

Avinoam, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today?

The Seeds

The seeds for my work with cancer patients today were planted many years ago. Originally from Israel, I was only six years old when the Yom Kippur war broke out. Living in a small community called Kibbutz, I vividly remember seeing the men leaving for the battlefield, leaving all of us behind. Some to be seen again and some to never return.

There is a seminal moment burned into my memory where I’ve witnessed for the first time the depth of loss, the tragedy of death, the breakdown and hollowed faces of those women whose husbands did not make it back. It was in that moment of immense pain that an equal desire was born deep within me… The desire to reach out, to soothe and heal those who lost so much.

Years later, while completing my education in Holistic Health, I was assigned to a group of terminal cancer patients as part of my internship. It was then that the dots began to connect. These people in my care had a similar look on their faces to those women in the past, as if they too have lost something, perhaps even everything.

Through my work with this amazing group of people, I realized the many ways, they have indeed lost. Their identity, mobility, and productivity are just a few examples, but most of all they have lost the illusion of security and of life that many of us take for granted.

I’m happy to say more about that if we move forward.

Has it been a smooth road?

No, it has not been a smooth road at all, still isn’t. The most challenging part of the journey is to educate people about the role they can play in healing and recovery. Most people do not want to assume any responsibility or learn about their part of the equation, mainly because doing so seems to suggest they are broken, defective, and guilty of creating illness in their lives. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

What else can you share with us, we’d love to hear more.
I am a published author, TEDx speaker, and a practitioner helping cancer patients who wish to play a greater role in their recovery and who understand there’s more to their cancer than what their doctor can touch, measure and cut… to strengthen immune function, increase resiliency and enhance their ability to benefit from medical treatment, ultimately for a better outcome.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
The answer to this question depends on whether you want to be a small fish in a big ocean or a big fish in a small pond. Because Boston is a medical hub, it is somewhat challenging for any holistic practitioner without letters such as MD after their name (like myself) to get started. Having said that, once you have achieved some form of recognition, that original obstacle transform and become the differentiating factor i.e. what set you apart from all the rest. This suits me and my personality but it may be challenging for others.
