Your Subconscious Mind is Your Book of Life

Rewriting Your Mental Story (program)

In The Power of Your Subconscious Mind (1963), Dr. Joseph Murphy famously wrote, “Your subconscious mind is your book of life.” As a hypnotherapist, I’ve spent over two decades delving into the fascinating world of the mind, and this powerful statement has proven itself true time and time again.

But what does it really mean to say your subconscious is your "book of life"? Simply put, your subconscious mind holds the script to your experiences—whether they lift you up or hold you back. If you're dissatisfied with your current experience due to illness or some other limitation, the story you're telling yourself may need a rewrite.

Can It Really Be That Simple?

Dr. Murphy elaborates, stating: "Whatever thoughts, beliefs, opinions, theories, or dogmas you write, engrave, or impress on your subconscious mind, you shall experience them as the objective manifestation of circumstances, conditions, and events. What you write on the inside, you will experience on the outside." In other words, the inner dialogue you engrave on your mind will inevitably shape the outer world you live in. Your life has two sides—what you see and what you feel—and these are connected by your thoughts and beliefs.

No, You Did Not Make Yourself Sick

I want to be very clear about one thing: highlighting the correlation between our thoughts, beliefs, and our health should never bring on guilt, shame, or self-blame. If these feelings arise, please understand they stem from past conditioning. Our thoughts about ourselves, shaped by life events and teachings, play a crucial role in how we experience and react to the world around us.

If we grow up internalizing negativity, fear, and pain, we become stuck in a cycle of avoidance, often trying to escape the uncomfortable emotions we’ve learned to associate with these experiences.

But unresolved emotions—like fear, guilt, and shame—are more than just feelings. They carry a frequency that sends signals to our brain to release stress hormones. Over time, constant exposure to these hormones can damage our immune system, making us vulnerable to illness and disease, including cancer. Research in psychoneuroimmunology confirms this connection: chronic stress weakens the immune system and makes the body more susceptible to harmful agents.

Rewriting Your Book of Life: A Path to Healing

The idea of changing our mental programming isn’t new. Every culture, across time, has developed its own methods for promoting mental wellness and health. Today, we’re fortunate to live in an era where science and medicine provide us with modern tools to prove that inner change can indeed lead to external transformation.

Hypnotherapy: The Key to Accessing the Subconscious Mind

In my book The New Cancer Paradigm, I dive deeper into how the mind works, offering real-life case studies that highlight the power of hypnotherapy in reshaping our subconscious mind. For now, imagine hypnotherapy as a key—a way to unlock and access the deep layers of your mind, much like a surgeon uses a scalpel to access the body.

The Body’s Operating System

For the sake of simplicity, we recognize that our mind is divided into two parts: the conscious and the subconscious. The conscious mind is logical, rational, and analytical. It’s responsible for making decisions, weighing options, and managing what information we allow in. Its purpose is thinking. The subconscious, however, is the emotional part of our mind. It governs bodily functions like digestion and heart rate, and more importantly, it plays a significant role in regulating our immune system. Its purpose is functioning.

While we may not have control over what happens beneath our conscious awareness, we do have the power to choose where we focus our attention, what we allow into our minds, and what we consciously think about. This is why Dr. Murphy’s statement holds such truth: what you impress upon your subconscious mind must eventually manifest (be expressed) in your outer reality.
